Part 7 A School is Born - Universal Design
2024.09.10
At Circular, universal design is a cornerstone of our practice. In this article, we explore how we applied our methodology at the award-winning Corona 3K Center to create a welcoming and accommodating educational environment.
We highlight the critical importance of accessibility in fostering an inclusive atmosphere for all students, staff, and visitors. By implementing thoughtful design elements, we have met or exceeded the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act, along with additional accommodations for child-sized occupants, ensuring every aspect of the school is accessible and user-friendly.
Walking through the hallways, you'll notice drinking fountains installed at three different heights. This provides comfortable and safe access for ambulatory and disabled adults and children alike, allowing all users to enjoy these essential amenities without assistance.
In the stairwells, we've installed dual-height handrails: a lower rail positioned for young children and an upper rail suited for adults. This design ensures that students of all sizes and ages can safely navigate the stairs throughout the building.
Our bathrooms are fully ADA-compliant but also include facilities specifically tailored for children. With appropriately sized fixtures—such as smaller toilets and grab bars at lower heights—these bathrooms are both functional and welcoming. Colorful floor tiles add a touch of warmth, making the space inviting for young users while still meeting strict accessibility standards.
While our construction plans detail many code-mandated requirements like the five-foot turning radius, many of our universal design solutions are meticulously planned in detailed millwork drawings and are best experienced in person.
Our commitment to accessibility goes beyond mere compliance; it's about creating an environment where every individual feels valued and supported. By incorporating these thoughtful design elements, we ensure that the school is a welcoming space for everyone.
